connect indirect to mysql via php-script

Hi
I would like to connect to a mysql-server via internet. The problem is, that i can not connect direct to the SQL-Server. I am using a webspace where i can use php and that is able to connect to the sql-server. (webspace oben but the sql-server behind a firewall). My question now is, if anybody knows a possibility to connect this way? I saw some programms that are having their own connector that have to be install and than they are able to exchange data with the sql-server.
Well something like "ActiveMySQL" just for zeos and not as vb.


PS: I don't know if this is the correct point for this question but i hope anybody does have an idea. By the way, I have not so many experience in php.
