Lazarus crashes when I set Connection1.connected:=true

Dear Friends,
I have worked with Delphi and Zeos for a while now, and recently made the move to get started with Lazarus and Zeos.
After downloading the latest of both I went through a smooth and uneventful installation.
When playing with my test project I find that when I try to connect to a database on my localhost Lazarus just simply dissappears...poof....
(MySQL ver 5.x by the way)
The fact that all of you are using Zeos on Lazarus much of the time means that I am overlooking something.
My Database is set,
my protocal is set,
my username, and password are both set correctly.
Any ideas?
